Situational & Behavioral Questions

Behavioral questions using the STAR method — conflict resolution, leadership examples, teamwork, handling failure, and pressure situations.

1

Tell me about a time you had a conflict with a teammate.

STAR Framework

  • Situation: "During our ML capstone project, a teammate and I disagreed on the model architecture"
  • Task: "We needed to decide between a simpler baseline vs. a complex transformer approach"
  • Action: "I proposed we run both approaches for one sprint with clear evaluation metrics"
  • Result: "The data showed the simpler model was better for our dataset size. My teammate agreed, and we delivered on time"

💡 Memory Trick: "STAR: Situation → Task → Action → Result. Always end with a positive outcome + learning."

2

Describe a time you failed. What did you learn?

Framework

Pick a REAL failure (not trivial). Show accountability, what you learned, and how you applied that learning. Never blame others.

Good Answer Structure

  • Describe the failure honestly (shows self-awareness)
  • Own your role in it (shows accountability)
  • Explain what you learned (shows growth mindset)
  • Show how you applied the lesson later (shows improvement)

💡 Memory Trick: "Failure story = Vulnerability + Accountability + Growth. Not 'disguised success'."

3

How do you handle tight deadlines and pressure?

Framework

Show systematic approach: Prioritize → Break down → Communicate → Execute. Give a specific example where you delivered under pressure.

Key Points to Cover

  • How you prioritize (MoSCoW: Must/Should/Could/Won't)
  • Communication: "I proactively flagged risks and proposed trade-offs"
  • Focus on what you CAN control
  • Self-care: "I maintain productivity by taking strategic breaks"

💡 Memory Trick: "Pressure = Prioritize + Communicate + Execute. Never say 'I just work harder'."

Questions 4-25 continue with the same detailed format.

Topics covered: Leadership examples, Taking initiative, Receiving critical feedback, Working with difficult people, Adapting to change, Multitasking, Going above and beyond, Ethical dilemmas, and dealing with ambiguity.
